I have a video editing program, Studio Plus (v 10.8). I have been trying to figure out how to copy home movies into digital format so we don't loose them. Turns out the program doesn't work with just sound and S cable. It needs a video capture device to turn analog to digital. I don't know which device to use. Here are four on Amazon. Can anyone give me advice on this? (Or any other advice on this process?)

From least to most expensive:

EasyCap USB 2.0 Video Capture Adapter with Video Editor Software

Diamond VC500 One Touch Video Capture Device

Dazzle DVD Recorder

Belkin F5U228 Hi-Speed USB 2.0 DVD Creator

Alternate suggestions welcome too on both hardware and software.

Was recently send a "more comprehensive" list of Fibromyalgia symptoms and was surprised to find some on the list I though were "separate problems" but didn't know why they were occuring. It's such a weird illness for the number of systems if affects and the way it varies in intensity both over time and between individuals.

There are a number of programs that can help you maintain multiple journals with mostly the same content. (Please, let me know if you do.) I thought I would post info here for folks who want to know.

Backing up your journals:

LJarchive: The most complete way I know of to back up both Livejournal and Insanejournal accounts, so you have a copy of not only every post but all comments, is with LJarchive. LJarchive is downloadable free but does not have support if you have trouble. There is a an comm [livejournal.com profile] ljarchive, where other users can sometimes help with problems. One of the nice things is that it can back up different journals including insane journal if you go to the "New Archive" option and save each one separately. It can export the journals for WordPress and other formats. Unfortunately, I don't know a way to export from LJ to IJ with this program. For that, I use LJ-Sec.You can download here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ljarchive/

Creating a copy at Insanejournal:

LJ-Sec: This program can also back up copies of multiple journals both at LJ and IJ. It also allows you to copy selected or all posts from one site to another. It does not allow you to copy the comments though. It can be downloaded here: http://www.mp3vcr.com/ljsec/

Posting to Both:

Semagic: This is primarily for posting new material to your journal. You can download the program here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/semagic/ The recent version will even let you post to multiple journals simultaneously such as both LJ and IJ. For information on how to do that, see this post: http://snapetoy.insanejournal.com/133401.html

I have been backing mine up since LJ issues arose back 2007. All of my current accounts are duplicated in both places. I don't think LJ is going away immediately but I don't really trust having everything in one place anyway. I am also planning on creating mirrored WordPress accounts, too. I had started to but ran into trouble with WP. Back to trying to figure that out.

I don't expect LJ to go anywhere any time soon. But I do have mirrored accounts for all my LJ accounts at both livejournal and insanejournal including [livejournal.com profile] purplerabbit, [livejournal.com profile] rabbitvillage, and [livejournal.com profile] dmatkins.

In preparation for not only the new book, but hopefully lots more original fiction to come, I have set up an livejournal account under the name [livejournal.com profile] dmatkins. So if you want to keep up on my writing career stuff, feel free to friend there.

There is also a yahoo groups mailing list with updates about current and future writings by D.M. Atkins and co-authors. Feel free to sign up HERE.

I also have a mirrored journal at Insane Journal.

We have bought the web domains dmatkins.net and dmatkins.org but have not set them up yet.

REQUEST: If you know anyone who is really good at Wordpress and is willing to help me set those up as well as tutor me in using them, please let me know!

When my grandmother, Juanita Davis, was a young new mother, she got a cookie press and a recipe for Spritz (butter) cookies and began a holiday tradition of making them with her children every year. For seventy years, my mother and her siblings, and now my generation and their children, have been making little shaped cookies every year and giving them as gifts to people we care about. In my family, we have made the little sun shaped ones part of our Yule ritual as well.

My mother and I make up large batches, fill bright cookie tins and give them as gifts. We spend a couple months running around thrift stores looking for the tins. (And if you have any empty tins from last year, you can always pass them on to us for use in the future.) This year my mother also added all her Red Hat Society group to our list. So over the last several weeks we have baked ten batches. The recipe says they make 150 cookies a batch. Which means we have made 1500 cookies! That's 60 tins of cookies.

The base of our tree is now surrounded by cookie tins. We will give them to our friends and neighbours on Winter Solstice. If you can't make our gathering, make sure to drop by for yours!

Three years ago I sold my online book store to give myself time and space to write full time. This was a decision I made with full support of my family.

It was rough going at first, but then I tried something new. I had been complaining to a friend about the lack of poly stories in fiction and she linked me to some fan fiction with poly themes. I had read and written fan fiction when I was a teenager but hadn't since its move to online. I discovered some surprisingly well written and interesting stories. And then I became inspired to write some. Since then, I have actually written and published over a dozen novels and just as many short stories on my online fan fiction journal. And they are very popular. One of my novels has had more than 30,000 readers. My fiction journal gets at least 500 hits a day from all over the world. The stories are read from every continent (except Antarctica). With co-authors I met through fan fiction, we have published over a million and half words of fiction, and written at least twice that.

I have, until now, kept that online identity separate from this one. But things are about to change. Three months ago, the publisher of Circlet Press contacted me. I know Cecilia Tan through both friends and fan circles. She and I met face to face the summer before last. She is the founder and publisher of the first erotic science fiction and fantasy book company. They have, until now, published short story collections. Now, Circlet Press will be moving into novels via ebooks. In September, she wrote inviting me to submit one. I had at least a dozen ideas for novels that would fit the description and sent her the list. She picked out a couple favourites and then my co-authors and I set to work. It took us a month to write the first draft. Then we set it aside for a month, which is something we usually do with them. In November we rewrote it. This week we submitted the 100,000 word novel to her and she has mailed us the contract for the book. There will probably be another round of rewrites before it is done.

Faewolf by D.M. Atkins and Chris Taylor will most likely be published this Spring. It will be an ebook available through Circlet Press, Amazon and other places. Like most of the fiction I have published online, Faewolf is explicit erotic queer fantasy. It is the story of Saoi, a Faewolf - a magical wolf who can shape shift into human form. Living as a human so he can attend college, Saoi falls in love with a young man named Kiya. Faewolf is a story of desire, love and adventure while these two characters struggle to find each other and to survive the perils facing them.

I hope this will be the first of many original new books I complete. My co-author and I have other stories planned both in this series and with other characters. I will keep folks posted on the progress of the book and more.

Our family is taking a Whale Watching trip on December 31st. If you would like to join us for the trip, we would need to know to make your reservation.

The tour will leave Half Moon Bay at 9 AM and return to dock at 1 PM. The trip is $40 per person.
For more information see: http://www.riptide.net/whale.htm

The reason for the trip is that our son will be here then and we like taking him on adventures!

But what about the children?

Another pair of hands to do the work.
Another pair of arms to hug them.
Another pair of ears to listen,
Another pair of eyes to watch out for them.
Another voice to comfort,
Another person to love them.

What about the children?

*Written this evening, inspired by the three children of [livejournal.com profile] coyote3502, [livejournal.com profile] deedeebythebay, and [livejournal.com profile] ladynanook. Though it also fits the answer to all our chosen families.*

I almost forgot to get my special lights out and found myself sitting here overwhelmed by the gloomy day. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] uncledark, all the lights, including the extra full-spectrum ones, are now set up and glowing in my room. For those who don't know, I have trouble with depression to begin with, but the winter is really bad. They call the phenomena Seasonal Affective Disorder. Add to that that cold weather makes the aches in my body, especially my leg, worse, and you can see why I am not fond of winter. Oddly enough there is also a weird thing with the rain. Almost everyone else I know likes the sound of rain. The sound drives me nuts. As in, anxiety attacks from the sound. I don't know why I am afraid of rain, but I clearly am.

So the rain comes down and I am trying to focus on my writing. I am in the middle of rewrites on an original book I am working on for publication. If all goes, well, the book will be submitted before the end of the year. (Hopefully sooner.)

Also, in the good news category. I got my hair done and my ears re-pierced. Self care is good.
