That's horrible. Forgive my ignorance about academic matters, but could you maybe apply to a program at a different institution? From my uninformed perspective, it seems likely that all of your course credits and such should be transferable, and you could re-use the research and writing you have already done towards your dissertation, right?

ugh. as a grad student,I know, it doesn't work that way. you have to start over again almost from scratch.
