Anyone out there been in the moutains when the seasons change from winter to spring?

What are the early signs?
How does the snow and ice change?
What other environmental changes would you notice?

Feel free to write or call me with observations. I am stuck on the beginning of Chapt. 18 because I am having trouble visualizing the transition.

... so I can't give any details (other than the end of summer sales, and the advertisements for Halloween and Thanksgiving-to-Christmas shopping season, stretched as far as the eye can see)

... but I think some of the signs you'd see would depend on *where* you have this scene taking place? Sierras in California, or back east?

I lived in Mt. Shasta for two years, I remember trees would be bare of leaves and fruit. But tiny green leaf buds would become apparent by mid february while crusty snow still sat on the ground. No flower buds yet, at least not that you can tell from the leaf buds.
