My cat, Oberon, has been sick for about a year now. We found out last summer that he has diabetes and thanks to the help of some of you, we were able to get him treatment. He takes insulin twice a day and it has helped. Unfortunately, it hasn't entirely solved the problem. While he has done better on the medicine, he has still been very ill - thin and weak. We have cared for him the best we could but realise it is only a matter of time. Or was.

We haven't seen him all weekend. He isn't likely to stay away by choice. He is usually demanding food and under foot. Sunday I checked with the neighbors and put missing cat signs up in the area. No one has seen him. He has been four days without his medicine and there no sign of him. I am believe my cat is dead. I would like to have at least been able to say good bye and would still like to at least be able to bury him.

Sorry, sweetheart. Obie was a great guy, and I was quite fond of him.

And I know you'd want to say goodbye and have his body - but he did things the True Feline Way. When a cat knows it's their time, they just want to be away from their loved ones, and find a quiet place alone where it can end with their dignity intact. So while my human side feels bad that you can't mourn properly, my feline side is glad that he ended things right and proper.

I am so very sorry to hear of this. I am glad for the extra year you had with him, but I know that no amount of extra time ever feels like enough in the end. Thinking peaceful thoughts for him and you all.

I'm very sorry that he's gone. While it is often a cat's way to go off alone at the end, I hope that you're still able to get the closure you want.

It's heartbreaking when you loose a pet. Having just lost one of mine, let me say I deeply empathize with your loss.

It's not unheard of for a pet to wander away from it's owners, though, when it's about to die. Last week our dog, Lady, went missing for nearly a week. Finally grands noticed something in the bushes (it's an acre of land, so there was alot of bush). It was lady, and she was gone.

I think pets do it consciously, maybe to spare their owners the loss? Or maybe they go out for one last communion with spirit. Who can tell.

*huge hug* I'm here if you need to talk, okay? I'm sure Im not the first choice in these matters, but I love you and worry for you all the same. Take care of yourself, okay?
