Royalty Checks
Apr. 24th, 2007 10:40 amI received a royalty check yesterday. They arrive quarterly. I don't make a lot of money from the non-fiction, but it is still amazing for me to see the list of which books have sold. They did better (as did my finances) when I was still on the speaking circuit. I became ill a fews years back and haven't been able to teach or travel like I use to. I miss it. Yet, I am gratified that my books still sell and are still read. Most non-fiction books don't have a long terms sales. My first was published in 2000 and is still good seller for the publisher.
There is something profoundly symbolic for me too about a royalty check. In a culture where money is still how we reward good work, it reminds me that as long as I keep getting those checks, I am a professional author.
Now I have several fiction works in progress and am hoping they are published in the next year or so. I have decided to use a slightly different version of my name on them. My non-fiction has my first and last name. I think I will use my initials and last name on the erotic fiction. Partially, this is to distinguish it from my work as a social scientist and also because there is a romance writer out there who uses the same name as my legal one.
