Okay, I know they aren't, I was there. And yes, we have a lot of physical stuff and mannerisms in common. On the other hand, not much in the way of interests or values in common.
Example of the morning: We are trying to figure out something inexpensive to do with six teens and preteens. My mother suggests a museum, which I echo as a great idea. Immediately, both sisters exclaim that as long as it isn't a History museum as "history is boring." I mention that I like history, and that it is part of what I study as an anthropologist. "No, it isn't," I am told by one sister, "You study monkeys and stuff."
Sigh. I explain that I study people and history, especially history about people is part of what I both study and enjoy. That the favorite channel in my household is the History Channel.
I get a "I'm sorry," sarcastic reply. Then laughter all around.
We went a small natural history museum. It was nice.
They do love me. Buy they sooo don't understand me.

Date: 2006-07-16 09:23 pm (UTC)I moved out when I was 17 and eventually, I did "run away to California." And if I hadn't, I'd probably be mad by now, and I don't have the strength to go back and visit. There's a cost to that, and I pay it. I bought and paid for my life by giving up that connection.
I respect your connection tremendously, and am glad to see you making sure your son gets to know his family. I admire you.
And you will be back in the land of the geeks soon, and we will fuss over you and chatter and welcome you back!
