It probably says a lot about my relationship with my mother and my child that many of my favorite love songs are about written by women to either their mothers or their children.

Here are some of my favorites:

You and Me Against the World by Helen Reddy
Icicle Blue by Holly Near
Mother, Mother by Chris Willaimson
Lullabies by Cozy Sheridan
Child of Mine by Carole King

There are also other songs which are not specifically written as such but are ones that I think of that way:
Devoted to You by The Everly Brothers (works for most love relationships for me and I have sung it to my mother)
You Are My Sunshine (unknown) My mother has sung this to me all my life, and I have sung it to Rowan all his life.

Do you know other songs like these? Are there similar ones about fathers?

You are very fortunate to have that kind of relationship with your mother. I am grateful for you.

*The* dad song is Cat's in the Cradle by Harry Chapin. Other nifty dad songs are Jimmy Buffet's Little Miss Magic and Clapton's Tears In Heaven (although that one's pretty sad.)

I know there are some good country songs for dads, but they're not coming to mind right now.

Of course, Cat's in the Cradle is about a father who wasn't there for his child. Sad. Are there are any one's about good relationships between father and child?

A couple of years ago, I put together a CD for my Dad as a gift to him.

Some of the tracks were from a tape of him and me from when I was 3 years old. In between, I interspersed songs which either I associated with him, or which were specifically about father/daughter (or at least parent/daughter) relationships.

Was lovely. He cried. Me too.

"I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again..."

It's my understanding James Taylor originally wrote that song for his dad's funeral.

The Jackson Song by Patti Smith

Little blue dreamer go to sleep
Let's close our eyes and call the deep
slumbering land that just begins
When day is done and little dreamers spin

First take my hand now let it go
Little blue boy you're on your own
Little blue wings as those feet fly
Little blue shoes that walk across the sky

May your path be your own
But I'm with you
And each day you'll grow
He'll be there too
And someday when you go
We'll follow you
As you go, as you go

Little blue star that offers light
Little blue bird that offers flight
Little blue path where those feet fall
Little blue dreamer won't you dream it all

Refrain

And in your travels you will see
Warrior wings remember Daddy
And if a mama bird you see
Folding her wings will you remember me
As you go, as you go
As you go, as you go

Sunrise, Sunset and Butterfly Kisses.

And a sadder one, "Chavaleh," from Fiddler -

" Little bird, little Chavaleh
I don't understand what's happening today
Everything is all a blur
All I can see is a happy child
The sweet little bird you were
Chavaleh..Chaveleh

Little bird, little Chavaleh
You were always such a pretty little thing
Everybody's favorite child
Gentle and kind and affectionate
What a sweet little bird you were,
Chavaleh, Chavaleh"
