Something I posted in a friend's journal that I wanted to share...

One of the friends on my livejournal has known me since at least 1978. We first met as part of Starbase Tulsa and were one of a handful of geek teens who found each other through sf clubs and conventions. We traveled long distances, most of us without cars, to find others like us. Without the courage of those children, I would not be here today.

I recently wrote about a couple of those geeks in my First Love post. I have thought a lot lately about the wonder of those early days and what it took for us to find each other. Here is my reply to his post...

"I understand the feelings. We carry the scars of isolation and rejection with us from those years. Of course, if we had not been so rejected by the kids at school, we would not have reached out to find others like ourselves. I sometimes think about what drove that young girl to get on Greyhound buses alone to travel to other places in search of others like herself. It doesn't make the pain less real. It does remind me that I would not have you, dear one, as a friend if I had been comfortable in Moore, Oklahoma. Would we have chosen a normal life? "
