In Memory of Ruin and Rebirth
Oct. 17th, 2006 09:58 pmSeventeen years ago today the earth moved under my feet. Unreinforced brick crumpled. My life disintegrated in blood, sweat and tears.
Today was the 17th Anniversary of the Loma Prieta Earthquake. It brought down most of downtown Santa Cruz. My friend Robin Ortiz died amid the falling bricks.
None of us touched by the events of that day were ever the same again. It didn't just require buildings be torn down and rebuilt. For some of us, it required our lives be rebuilt as well. For me, it required that I pick up the rubble of my personality and decide who I was going to be. The person you love today is part of that process.
