We have a wonderful, affectionate and intelligent polydactyl Maine Coon cat named Oberon. He is approximately ten years old. We have had him since he was two. He loves people and is very social.

And unless I can find someone to adopt him, he will die.

We took him to the vet to find out why he is basically starving to death no matter what we feed him. He eats, drinks, still runs about and even hunts. But he is wasting away. I feared he might have something fatal like cancer. We switched vets and spent the $140 in tests because even though he had been given several rounds of anti-worm medication, he wasn't putting back the weight.

The good news is that what is wrong with him is treatable. The bad news is that I can't do it.

He has insulin dependant diabetes. He will need to have an initial day at the vet where they give him insulin and then test repeatedly until they find out what amount of insulin he needs. That will run around $250. Then he will need to have twice daily insulin shots for the rest of his life. A check up a week after beginning treatment and every three months thereafter. The monthly insulin bill would probably be around $50.

Why can't we do this? Two reasons.

First, we haven't even been able to get ourselves much needed medical and dental care of late. Two of us need four crowns a piece. My mom's glasses are out of date and I need extensive medical care to keep up with the fibromyalgia which takes a couple hundred a month even with insurance. We just don't have the money to do it.

Second, I don't have the physical health to do the twice daily shots he would need. It really does use up most of my energy and time just trying to keep myself functional at this point. I forget things easily and somedays I never get out of my room. And the guys are trying to work, live and help me.

I don't want to watch Oberon die a slow lingering death because I don't have what it takes to care for him. So I am offering up this truly remarkable cat to someone anyone willing to take care of him. This is hard for me. I have never given away a pet in my life. They are family to me. But I love him too much to watch him suffer if there is anyone out there who is willing to take care of him.

Please email or call me if you want our King of the Faerie, Oberon.

First, *big giant hugs unless fibro makes you unhuggable*

Would you like me to post this to kittypix?

I've also referred a friend over here who has a diabetic kitty, thinking she'd be a good resource for someone wanting to know what kind of effort it takes.

How terrible

I'm so sorry to hear that you're having to deal with this. If such a thing were to happen to Simba, I think we'd be stuck in the same boat. I know I've fallen behind on my own (relatively minor) medical needs since I was last a direct hire.

I do hope you find a home for him with someone with the wherewithal to care for him. Please keep all of us posted.

*hugs*

Sorry to hear he's sick. I love him, but I can't really do twice a day shots either. I'm gone too often.

Shit. In some ways, that's even worse. You could in theory do something, but... you can't.

I'm so sorry, honey.

:-( *gentle zen hugs*

I'm so sorry to hear this; having a pet have severe medical issues is terribly hard. I wish I could help.

Perhaps your local Maine Coon rescue group could help find a good home for him?

awww...poor kitty. We have 3 already *and* we're in much the same financial boat or I know we'd do it.

I feel bad being another "I'd love to but you know I can't." But oh we have to find someway to take care of him!

Is there any way that Lon/Troy could administer the 2x/day shots if the community were able to raise the money for you folks to keep Oberon?

For anyone who is thinking about it, Maine Coons are very social, very intelligent, very vocal cats who usually love to affectionately butt with the tops of their heads. If we didn't have three cats (getting three medications and needing four surgeries), I'd consider bringing Oberon to the East Coast somehow.
