Sucks to have to move, but sounds like an opportunity! Rentals are the cheapest I've seen in years. I'm looking in Alameda and I think see places for $2000 that could work for you guys. El Cerrito's a cheaper rental market.
Have you thought about buying? One person out of three out of work isn't that much of a hindrance and the market is getting really good. A rule of thumb is this: job, good credit, down payment. Three is ideal; two will do; none takes determination.
